How trout successfully climb the falls - Photo 48

The main requirement for a successful leap is the correct body angle. If fish keep their bodies perfectly parallel to the fall stream, they stand a much better chance of success. If they hit the fall at too sharp of a forward angle, they will penetrate the current and slam into the rocks behind the fall.(Look closely and you can see the tail tip of a trout who had this exact experience.) If they tip back too far, they will be knocked backward by the current. Their whole body must hit the water evenly so that they can instantly begin swimming to get over the top.
