The Fast Easy Way To
Finding The Best Lodging & Recreation Prices
For several good reasons tourism operations may not always publish their best
prices. Some keep hot deals low keyed for competitive reasons. Others test new price
points before publishing. If business is good there will be fewer bargains, but there are
reasons other than slow times to offer hot deals. How do you find these unpublished
bargains?
Phoning each business takes too much time. That's why we
developed the 2Cooleys Vacation Deal Finder.
Fill out the form. As soon as you click the submit button your needs are instantly emailed
to several area tourism businesses. If they have what you want, they respond with
information and any deals they may have going. Some will have deals, others will not. And
even that can change from week to week. You just don't know until you ask!
The email process saves you a lot of time, and you find the
best unpublished prices. Your name is not added to any lists. Each operator responds one
time to your request. You'll get several responses over a 24 hour period. Pick the best
offer and save!
About The White River & North Fork
River
Location
The White River and North Fork River are tailwaters issuing respectively from the dams at
Bull Shoals Lake and Norfork Lake. They are located in north central Arkansas just under
the Missouri/Arkansas state line, which places them in the south-central Ozarks. The small
City of Mountain Home, Arkansas sits between the rivers and their related lakes.
Recreation Resources
Both rivers are famous for rainbow, brook, cutthroat and brown trout fishing adventures.
Resorts, trout docks, and trout fishing guides offer everything needed for a successful
trout fishing trip. While trout fishing is the primary attraction, Bull Shoals Lake and
Norfork Lake are a short drive away from most points along the rivers. Area visitors also
participate in lake fishing and lake watersports. There are no closed fishing seasons in
Arkansas, so fishing of all types is a year around pursuit.
Watchable wildlife inhabit the banks,
forests, and meadows along both rivers. Birders and nature photographers find subjects in
wildflowers, hawks, eagles, otter, mink, bobcat, foxes, coyotes, song birds, deer,
butterflies, and an occasional black bear. The shoreline experience is a mixture of
limestone bluffs rising as high as 200 feet, dense hardwood forests, and bottomland
meadows. Many sections of both rivers are not developed, or only lightly developed.
Attractive small acre residences and cattle farms comprise the majority of development.
Fishermen and nature enthusiasts alike enjoy the scenic float trips experienced on the
White and North Fork Rivers. (The North Fork River is also called the "Norfork
River" by locals.)
Civil Amenities
Mountain Home, Cotter, Bull Shoals, Calico Rock, Flippin, Gassville, Yellville, and
Mountain View Arkansas are all towns where lodging, dining, shopping, tackle, banking,
churches and additional civil amenities are found. The City of Mountain Home, (population
13,000) Arkansas is the largest town in the area and is central to both lakes and both
rivers.

Trout
Fishing Information
Fishing Methods
The trout fishing season is open all year. Fishing from the bank, wade fishing, and
fishing from flat-bottomed river John boats are all popular methods of trout fishing. Fly
fishing, spin fishing, and bait fishing are all popular. Several local stores and shops
sell all types of tackle.
Boat Rentals
Rent river John boats from trout docks and some resorts. If you are not experienced in
running a river boat, listen to what the rental service operators tell you. They'll
explain all you need to know to have a fun, safe fishing trip. While boating accidents do
occur, almost all can be avoided by using common sense and heeding the advise of the boat
renters.
Fishing Regulations
Both the White River and the North Fork River have varying regulations which change from
time to time. If you fish with a trout fishing guide your guide will know all the laws and
regulations. If you are fishing without a guide, pick up a copy of the Arkansas Trout
Fishing Guidebook. These are available anywhere you buy a fishing license. You can also
read fishing regulations, plus buy licenses, at the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission Web site.
River Access
Public access points all along both sides of the White River and North Fork River have
boat launch ramps, parking, and spots for bank fishing. Many resorts and trout docks have
private river access for their guests. Several river resorts are right on the river banks
so all you need do is walk out of your cabin to trout fish.
Guided Trout Fishing Services
There are numerous reasons why hundreds of experienced trout fishermen hire guides. And if
you have never fished either river before, we highly recommend fishing with a guide for at
least a full day. While the guides may not reveal all their top trout fishing secrets,
they will talk about river boating safety, trout feeding habits, baits, and the many
different fishing regulations. As a general rule you'll catch more trout, and larger
trout, fishing with a guide. The reason that experienced fishermen still hire guides is
because doing so allows them to concentrate more on fishing and less on boat driving.
Further, the top guides can't be beat for knowing where to fish on any given day.
Beginners, Children, & Women
Welcome
Almost all trout fishing guides work equally as well with beginners, men, women,
and children. If you have never trout fished let your guide know. They'll do all the work
for you, like bait hooks, rig lines and lures, cast, net the fish, and remove trout from
your hook. All you need do is have a good time!

Planning & Lodging
About Lodging & Guide Services
All of the resorts and guide services on the White and North Fork rivers are privately
owned Mom & Pop operations. There are no large resorts or chain hotels. In almost all
cases you'll be communicating with the owners. All of them provide extremely good personal
service. They have a strong passion for helping people have a great time on the rivers.
They keep their cabins clean, their boats well equipped, and in good repair. However, from
time to time, there are a few who don't quite measure up. To avoid a bad experience ask
lodging hosts and guides about how clean they keep their cabins, boats, and equipment. The
good ones (and there are very few rogues) appreciate your concerns and they take great
pride in explaining how they provide top service.
Where To Get The Best Trip Advice
If you are planning a trip to either the White River or the North Fork River, or both,
first talk to a few resort owners and trout fishing guides. They are the best information
sources for trout fishing, lodging, meals, and anything else you'll need. They are in the
full time business of helping their guests plan fun, exciting, safe, and comfortable trips
to the area. Costs for lodging, meals, and recreation vary considerably from the
economical to the upscale. Take a look at operator Web sites, then either phone them, or
use the 2Cooleys White River & North Fork
River Vacation Deal Finder.
Civil Amenities
Several towns are near each river access point. Restaurants, shopping, tackle and
licenses, ATM machines, and a long list of other civil amenities are always 5 to 20
minutes away by highway. When checking out lodging and guide services ask about how close
or how far you'll be from civil amenities if you want to do more than fish.
Group Trips
Business teams, church groups, family reunions, and a long list of other groups enjoy
fishing together. Group trips can be guided or unguided. However, most groups do prefer
guided float fishing trips. For the most fun plan on two persons per boat plus a guide if
planning a guided group trip. Otherwise you can get three persons in a rental boat. Visit
the Web sites of resorts and fishing guides offering group trips. Take a look at what they
offer for lodging, meals, and fishing services, and package pricing. You'll soon discover
several operators who have extensive experience managing group fishing trips.
RV Parks & Camping
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operate a large riverside RV and camping facility on the
North Fork river just below Norfork dam. The State of Arkansas operates a large riverside
RV and camping park on the White River just below Bull Shoals dam. These locations are
both extremely popular and therefore you need to make reservations well in advance of your
trip.

Which River Is "Best"?
Ask any local or frequent visitor this question and you'll get impassioned answers
partial to one or the other river. The truth is you'll have fun on either river, and
you'll catch a lot of trout either way. Many fishermen will fish the White River one day,
and then fish the North Fork another day. You can also fish both rivers in the same trip.
Here are the most obvious differences. The
North Fork River has about 3.5 miles of top trout fishing, and the White has over 60 miles
of top trout fishing water. When you fish the White you'll most likely fish a lot more
water. The White is also wider and deeper than the North Fork, which is why many fly
fishers who wade fish prefer the North Fork River.
Both the White River and the North Fork River
have four trout species - brook, brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. However, if you are
pursuing primarily brook trout, fish the North Fork. If you are a trophy trout fisherman,
trophy trout inhabit both rivers. Simply because of its size the White River yields more
trophy catches in a year than the North Fork.
The North Fork enjoys one major advantage
over the White River, and that is the outflow water from the Norfork National Fish
Hatchery. This outflow is very rich in nutrients which feeds the aquatic insect population
in the North Fork. Trout in the North Fork grow large quite fast. For many years the World
All Tackle Record for brown trout was held by a brown trout caught on a night crawler in
the North Fork River. This trout still holds second place in the World All Tackle records.
Almost all professional guides and resorts
conduct trout fishing trips on both rivers. Ask your lodging host and guide their opinion
on the matter, and if you are a fly fisher, stop by the local fly shops where you'll get
informed opinions as well. The debate is way too detailed to cover here! |
