Hello Fly Fishers!
June is here, along with high temps and humidity and at times storms,
fortunately not at the levels of rainfall we experienced earlier this year.
Lakes are still high, and as normal due to power demand we are seeing most days high
levels of generation for both rivers, all be it there has been some shut down for short
periods on the Norfork river. At this time from 12 am to early on, 6 to 8 am in the
morning.
More or less due to the consistent current flow levels on the White river this has flushed
out the worst of the trash, all be it you may still find at times colored water due to
rise and fall of cfs rates at the dam zones. Most of the time it is still fishable water.
Your only option if faced with bad water conditions is to head upstream in front of it,
way downstream below it or move to another location.
Wade fishing access has of course been limited due to the high water conditions, all be it
there are zones that can be accessed. There are options other than the White river system.
The Spring river from Mammoth springs does provide good fishing and public access, both
for wade and boat fishing
Then we have the options of fishing the Buffalo and Crooked creek for small mouth, both of
which have been fishing well these past few weeks. There are many other warm water creeks
here in Arkansas that also provide great water for float and wade fishing.
Fishing.
This past month l have fished more so from Bull Shoal dam right through to the lower
section of Buffalo shoals. Fish numbers here right through the 32 miles are good. Many of
the Bows have done well due to the high water and many of those fish are in the 15 to
17ins size range.
Browns also are averaging from 15 to 20 ins with many over that size. We have also seen
some real nice Cutts in the 20 to 24 ins mark from the Norfork river.
More or less, the overall best methods of fishing are as l wrote this past month, dynamite
and San Juan worms are most days good choices. You may have to ring the changes to find
the color the fish prefer, why this at times differs so much l cannot answer. Other than
there will be a difference between stock fish and those that have been in the system for
some time, and in some cases overall water color coupled with overhead light conditions
will make a difference so far as visibility of the fly being fished.
Streamer fishing both with sink tip and full sink lines has been a good bet some days with
better than average fish being caught, all be it may not be a high fish numbers day, not
that this matters if you nail a 25 ins fish, which by any standards is a trophy trout any
place.
Aside from streamer fishing l would also suggest you work the shore lines with large dry
flies, such as hoppers, stonefly imitations and flies of that nature. We are looking at
hook sizes here from 10 to 6 long shank.
Our tailwaters are not noted for great stonefly hatches as rivers out west see, but we do
have them present here. Mainly the emergence is early morning, which is why few would see
the adults flying around.
Trophy Browns will hug tight into shallow, slow water back eddies and are very likely to
respond to a large dry fly fished close into the bank and around tree roots and rock
structure.
Consider here also at this time of the year the terrestrial bugs are abundant in great
numbers, moths, beetles and all else will be eaten if they are see by fish as they become
trapped in the water surface.
Give it a go you never know what you may catch.
OK, guys a short report this month, but do refer back to May report for further
information regarding best fishing techniques to use at this time.
Or drop me an email.
Tight lines all, and see you on the water.

around America at fly fishing functions and shows. Over the years Davy has fished in over
40 countries around the world but his choice for base of operation is right here on the
